Extra long exposures

I am up to week 3 of my photography course. We had a three week break as my teacher Mark went overseas for a couple of weeks.

Photo overload this week - sorry I could not choose which ones to include.  I will come back and show how long the exposure was for each shot - grumpy kids at the moment.  The longest exposure was 2 minutes!

A little late this week.

Everyone always stops us in the street because of Ella's hair - so here it is in all its glory.

Looooooonnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg Exposures

Last night I had my second of four photography classes.  I wanted to change the location this time to the Newcastle Baths. I have wanted to shoot down here since I first got my camera.

To say I had a lot of fun was an understatement.  I don't think I stopped smiling the whole lesson.

We worked on long exposures this week - using filters. These photos were taken between 6:00pm and 7:00pm - when the sun was strong and hot.  I am hooked and going to have to get myself some filters.

All photos have been taken using my 18-55mm kit lens.

Last post I said I would show you a before and after.  Here is a before... this was under-exposed.

After a play around in Lightroom - and this is the result.

OK, not the best photo as there is quite a bit of noise in the foreground - but not bad from what I started with.

Beginners Course

Ever since I bought my DSLR, I have been looking for a beginners photography course. I have seen quite a few, but I was put off by the size of the classes and by their websites - I know this sounds terrible, but if I dont like the pictures on their website, I am dubious as to what I can be taught by them.   On a recommendation I approached Mark from Tighes Hill Photography, what appealed to me about this course was that it was one-on-one spread over 4 weeks.

Tuesday was my first class and we headed down at 6pm to Stockton Beach.  I was a bit worried driving from work as the weather was a bit suspect, but the light and the clouds were perfect for shooting.

I had a great time on the course (thanks Mark) learnt some new things and really excited that what I was doing was right - I was so worried that I was doing everything wrong, so great to know that I was on the right track.

Photos were taken with my 18-55mm kit lens - I have lens envy at the moment as I had a little play with Mark's Sigma 10-20mm lens - going to have to save up for that one.

They have been edited in Lightroom - I will post some before and after's in another post. I found some new tricks today that I am pretty excited about.

Project 52 - 2/52

It has been a busy week. I work 3 days a week, but have managed to squeeze in 33 hours in those 3 days. I was worried that I would not get anything in this week, but bath time saw me running for the camera.

I have played edited this photo in Lightroom (thanks for the tip Nic)  I am so far loving this program and have been able to navigate my way through it without any instructions.

Project 52 - 1/52

I debated which picture to use for my first for Project 52 - I left it until the last minute to decide

I love this photo - I could look at it all day.

Light

I am always looking for a nice photo opportunity. I have found a great place for photo shoots is the bath.

I love these photos - they were taken in AV setting with the 18-55mm kit lens. I love the light that I have in the bathroom. Ella has started to dread bath time as there is always a camera in her face.

Paris

Paris is our six year old boxer.  I find that in the last few months - maybe more, she has started to really age and go grey. This weathered look upsets me somewhat as I have already lost one of my boxers - I am not ready to lose another one.

Hopefully I have a few more years with her.

The beach

I have been wanting take my camera down to the beach for awhile now. We went down late this afternoon. The skies grey, threatening rain - however, as usual nothing eventuated.

 iso 100 f/1.8 1/2500

I always am interested when reading anything related to photgraphy what camera and lens are they using. In my case - I am using a Canon 500D, I bought it with the single lens kit - which is the 18-55mm, however, since I bought the 50mm 1.8 I have not used the kit lens. All these photos - and the photos from the post before have been taken the 'nifty fifty'

All these photos are straight out of the camera (SOOC) - I havent worked out Photoshop yet. That is my next thing to learn.

Welcome welcome 2011

It is a brand new year and I thought I would start a brand new blog - I haven't gotten rid of the old one, I am going to try to keep both of them going.

Why am I starting a new one? Because I have a new hobby, and it is slowly taking over. It is a photography hobby.

Participating in Project52 which is a photo every week from your chosen subject - mine being family/landscape.

I want this as a record as how much I grow over the year in terms of my photography.

Here are some of my last pictures of 2010 - before the illness hit. As you will soon come to realise my favourite subject to shoot is my kids Ella and Harry

So come with me on this journey while I learn about f/stops, aperture and shutter speeds and everything in between. Hoping that we all can take more beautiful pictures before the year is out.
